Emergency water leak: what to do before the plumber arrives

For an active leak, close the nearest isolation valve or the apartment supply, isolate electricity in the wet area, contain the water and alert neighbours or building emergency services if a shared riser is involved.

How to stop the water quickly

Close the appliance valve first. If this does not stop the leak or the source is unknown, close the main apartment inlet. Do not force an old seized valve because it may break.

Water near electricity

Do not touch wet outlets or appliances. If the board can be reached over a dry route, isolate the affected circuit or main switch. Leave the area if it is unsafe.

Containing water temporarily

Use a container, towels and protection for furniture. Tape or a clamp is not a repair and is only a short-term measure on an accessible cold pipe where it can be fitted safely.

Useful photos for the plumber

Take one wide view, a close-up of the leak, the valves and access route. Say whether the water is isolated and whether flow continues.

When to contact building management

Report leaks from a shared riser, slab or neighbouring apartment to the building or emergency service as well. A plumber inside one apartment may not control the common supply.

Frequently asked questions

Should I close one valve or the whole apartment?

Start with the nearest working isolation valve. If flow continues, close the apartment main inlet.

Can I seal the pipe temporarily?

A temporary clamp may be possible on an accessible cold pipe. Hot, concealed or badly damaged pipework needs professional assessment.

What should I say when booking?

Give the address, source, whether the supply is isolated, approximate flow and whether water is near electrics.
