Common causes of outlet heating
A loose terminal increases resistance and temperature. Worn contacts, a damaged plug, high appliance load, ageing aluminium wiring or an unsuitable extension lead can also be responsible.
What to do immediately
Unplug the appliance if this is safe and the plug has not melted. Turn off the circuit for severe heat, smoke or crackling. Never use water on electrical equipment.
Why replacing the faceplate may not be enough
The electrician checks the mechanism, cable, terminals, box, plug and circuit load. Heat-damaged insulation or conductor must be repaired, not hidden behind a new outlet.
When a dedicated circuit is needed
Water heaters, ovens and hobs may require a dedicated cable and protection. The decision depends on appliance power, cable size and installation method.

Why does an extension lead get hot?
Overload, undersized cable, a coiled reel or weak contacts can cause heat. High-power appliances should not use a random extension lead.
